Types of Hounds:
All hounds originated as a breed to assist huntersby tracking
or chasing the animal being hunted. It is a common misconception
that all hound dogs rely on scent to track there prey. However,
this is not true in all cases. There are actually three classes
of hounds: Sight, scent and "other".
The sight hound primarily uses its highly acute eyesite to
track its prey and then uses its acceptional speed to help
chase and run down the prey. These dogs are VERY fast and
will catch and kill game (deer, hare, gazelle, etc.) by itself.
The scent hound primarily utilizes its highly developed sense
of smell to follow and track prey. The scent hound is not
especially fast but has tremendous endurance and will stay
relentlessly on a trail until the prey is located.
The third group, "other" is basically dogs that
comprise hybrids of the sight and scent types of hound. They
utilize both senses and do not rely acutely on either one
and are a hybrid of the speed and endurance model.
